Guardian Angels
(Hit Refresh if you have been here before...:)
Angels are everywhere!

Lately it seems that the world has become interested in angels and angels abound in television, videos, books, art, trendy shops..you name it!  However...angels have ALWAYS been around!

Angel comes from the Greek work Aggelos which means messenger.

Scripture mentions numerous angelic encounters and angels appear in both the Old and New Testaments. As a matter of fact, Angels are mentioned at least over 100 times in the Old Testament and approximately over 165 times in the New Testament.  I think that is pretty awesome!  Since there is no way I could possibly list EVERY single angel encounter, I am going to put some of my favorites.

For to his angels he has given command about you,
that they guard you in all your ways.

-Psalm 91:11

Daniel answered the king:, "O king, live forever! My God has sent his angel and closed the lions' mouths so that they have not hurt me.  For I have not been found innocent before him; neither to you have I done any harm, O King!
Daniel 6:22

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David.  The virgin's name was Mary.  Upon arriving, the angel said to her:  Rejoice, O highly favored daughter!  The Lord is with you.  Blessed are you among women!  She was deeply troubled by his words and wondered what his greeting meant.  The angel went on to say to her: " Do not fear, Mary.  You have found favor with God.  You shall conceive and bear a son and give him the name Jesus.  Great will be his dignity and he will be called Son of the Most High.  The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father.  He will rule over the house of Jacob forever and his reign will have no end. "
-Luke 26:33

But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. Even as she wept, she stopped, to peer inside, and there she saw two angels in dazzling robes.  One was seated at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had lain.
-John 20:11-12

After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene came with the other Mary to inspect the tomb.  Suddenly there was a mighty earthquake as the angel of the Lord descended from Heaven.  He came to the stone, rolled it back and sat on it.  In appearance, he resembled a flash of lightening while his garments were as dazzling as snow.  The guards grew paralyzed with fear of him and fell down like dead men.  Then the angel spoke, addressing the women: "Do not be frightened, I know you are looking for Jesus the crucified, but he is not here.  He has been raised, exactly as he promised.  Come and see the place where he was laid.  The go quickly and tell the disciples: "  He has been raised from the dead and now goes ahead of you to Galilee, where you will see him.' That is the message I have for you"
-Matthew 281:7

What kind are angels are there?
1. Seraphim
2.  Cherubim
3.  Thrones
4.  Domination's
5.  Virtues
6.  Powers
7.  Principalities
8.  Archangels
9.  Angels

St. Thomas Aquinas, ranked these, in descending order.  According to the booklet, All About Angels, printed by Catholic Digest, "the seraphim closest to God are identified with love, the cherubim with wisdom."  The booklet references an Elizabethan poem by Thomas Hey wood which discusses the rank and disposition of the angels.

The Seraphim dot in the word imply,
A Fervent Love and Zeal to the Most-high...
The Cherubim denotes to use the Fullness
Of absolute Knowledge, free from Human dullness..
The name of Thrones, his glorious Seat displays;
His Equity and Justice, these still praise..
Dominions, the Angels' office dispose;
The Virtues (in the second place) are those
That execute his high and holy will:
The Potentates they are assistant still,
The malice of the Devil to withstand:
For God hat given it to their powerful hand...
The Principates, of princes take the charge,
Their power on earth to curb, and to enlarge
And these work Miracles, The Archangels are
Ambassadors, great matters to declare.
The Angels' commission hath not that extent,
They have only us Men in Government.

Saints & Guardian Angels

St. Gemma Galgani had a very special relationship with her guardian angel.  He was very protective of her.  He was presented her with two crowns.  One was a beautiful crown of lilies and the other was a crown of thorns.  He asked her to choose which one she would like to have.  Without hesitation, she chose the crown of thorns.

Blessed Padre Pio also believed in angels.   He wrote.."Near us is a celestial spirit who, from the cradle to the tomb, does not leave us for an instant".  Also, he would wrote, "When you cannot come to me, Send me your Guardian Angel.  He can take a message from you to me and I will assist you as much as I can."
